Welcome to Vukovar, city located in the east of Croatia, known for its rich history, culture, tradition, baroque architecture, Vučedol dove, the Danube river and, above all, the city known for the hospitality of its inhabitants.
Vukovar lies on two rivers, Vuka and Danube, which have had immense role in history. Ancient civilisations have been found on their banks. Browsing through history you will find that Vukovar has had a major role in it. The 5000-year-old Vučedol culture found on the bank of the river Danube has been recorded in all history books throughout Europe. The Vučedol Orion is the oldest European calendar and the archaeological artefact - the Vučedol Dove - discovered in 1938, has been the symbol of the City of Vukovar. It has been sending messages, telling stories about their significance which crosses borders of both Vukovar and Croatia.
Vukovar is the city you will always remember as it leaves no one indifferent. Take a stroll through the city streets and you will realize that this is a city rich in cultural and historic heritage and tradition.
Vukovar has many beautiful and valuable landmarks, such as the Palace of Sirmium, the building of the stage-coach Post Office, the House of Magistrate’s Court, the Gymnasium, the Grand Hotel and the Eltz castle (now the City museum) with its great land looking at the Danube, thus creating a unique scenery that forms the identity of the city.
Did you know that the Franciscan church of st. Philip and James is the third in length in Croatia? Make sure to visit it and hear stories about its rich independent library and the patron of Vukovar, st. Bono. Then take a stroll by Bećarski cross, through the Baroque city center to mouth of the Vuka river into the Danube. This is a place where a white cross stands as a symbol for all the victims fallen for a freedom of Croatia. It stands as a memorial but also as a warning. Memorial Vukovar is a unit which is being visited in a single breath - Museum of Memories - Vukovar hospital 1991., Memorial center and the mass grave Ovčara, Homeland war victims Memorial Cemetery and the Memorial center of the Homeland war situated at the Vukovar military base of 204th brigade, and is consolidated under the name of Vukovar Nocturno. It is a story about love and courage, strength and pain, of human dignity and the victory of life. Intense emotions that overcome you after that can only be soothed by the view of the Danube, which was and always will be our link with Europe and the world, but will also represent our hope and comfort.
Vukovar is still a city of contrasts, but it moves forward with steady steps. It has its Vukovar - film festival which is unique because of the location of film projections - barge on the Danube. An event which should also be written in a calendar is Vukovar ethno fair which takes place on the first weekend in October, each year.
